Wickford rail services expected to resume August 26 after derailment

Rail services in Essex are expected to return to normal on Wednesday, August 26, following a train derailment near Wickford last Friday. The incident involved a Greater Anglia train traveling from Southend Victoria to London Liverpool Street, causing significant damage to the railway infrastructure.

Repair teams have been working around the clock to address the damage, which includes replacing approximately 1.5 miles of track and more than 3,700 sleepers. The recovery operation also requires major repairs to signaling, overhead line equipment, bridges, and embankments. Jamie Burles, Managing Director for GBR Anglia, described the recovery as one of the largest and most complex recent tasks for the railway.

While services to and from Southend Victoria are expected to resume on Wednesday, the Wickford to Southminster line will continue to utilize replacement bus services through Friday, August 28, due to pre-planned engineering work. Passengers are advised to check travel arrangements before commuting.
