Wickford train derailment and rail repairs

Overview

Following a train derailment near Wickford on August 14, Greater Anglia has worked to repair significant damage to railway infrastructure. The incident involved a train traveling from Southend Victoria to London Liverpool Street; no injuries were reported among the more than 60 passengers on board.

Repair efforts included replacing approximately 1.5 miles of track and more than 3,700 sleepers, alongside repairs to signaling, overhead line equipment, bridges, and embankments. Jamie Burles, Managing Director for GBR Anglia, described the recovery as “one of the largest and most complex recent tasks for the railway.”

Normal rail services on the Wickford line are expected to resume on Wednesday, August 26. While services between Southend Victoria and London Liverpool Street will return to the normal timetable, some early morning journey times may be extended. Replacement bus services will remain in place on the Wickford to Southminster line through Friday, August 28, due to pre-planned engineering work.
