Wicknell Chivayo dies in helicopter crash near Marondera

Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo, his wife Lucy Muteke, two pilots, and a personal aide died on 30 September when a Bell 430 helicopter crashed near Marondera in Mashonaland East. While Chivayo’s sister, Esther Chivayo, maintains the crash was a genuine accident, the government has called for a formal investigation to establish the cause.

The incident has triggered significant economic and social fallout. Luxury car dealerships in Harare are facing financial instability due to unpaid balances for high-end vehicles. Chivayo was known for an extravagant gift economy, having reportedly distributed hundreds of luxury vehicles and cash gifts valued at approximately US$47 million to various individuals.

The crash has also sparked public debate regarding the nature of the event. Some observers have framed the violent scene as a form of divine accountability, while others focus on the technical and human aspects of the aviation tragedy.
