Wicknell Chivayo helicopter crash and aftermath
Overview
On September 30, 2026, Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo, managing director of Intratrek Zimbabwe, and his wife, Lucy Muteke, were killed in a Bell 430 helicopter crash near Kudenga Farm in Mashonaland East Province. The accident also resulted in the deaths of security aide Senelisiwe Magagula and pilots Captain Kelvin Tafirei Soda and Captain Courage Mutavirwa.
The aircraft, registered as Z-PED and operated by Sky Helicopters Private Limited, was traveling from Chikomba District to Marondera when it went down. Information Minister Dr Zhemu Soda stated that a formal investigation is underway, with a preliminary report on wreckage, meteorological data, and maintenance records expected within 30 days.
Following the funeral on October 8, 2026, which featured extravagant arrangements including a US$217,000 gold casket, the couple was laid to rest side by side at the Sahwira Glen Forest Memorial Park in Harare. The aftermath has shifted toward financial and political implications. Chivayo, known for his involvement in the energy sector including the 100-megawatt Gwanda Solar Project, had distributed approximately US$47 million in luxury vehicles and cash. Consequently, luxury car dealerships in Harare are facing significant financial losses due to unpaid balances.
Political tensions emerged regarding the funeral's attendance, with Youth Minister Tino Machakaire defending attendees against critiques of Vice President Constantino Chiwenga’s absence. Additionally, Chivayo’s family has reportedly appealed to President Emmerson Mnangagwa to ensure the protection of his children's inheritance. On October 23, a commissioned Rolls-Royce Phantom VIII, featuring a personalized registration plate, was delivered to Chivayo’s residence after an import duty of approximately US$983,000 was paid.
