Wicknell Chivayo killed in Zimbabwe helicopter crash

Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo and his wife, Lucy Muteke, were killed on September 30, 2026, when their helicopter crashed near Marondera. The accident also claimed the lives of three others: security aide Senelisiwe Magagula and pilots Captain Kelvin Tafirei Soda and Captain Courage Mutavirwa.

According to a security aide in a following helicopter, the pilot flying Chivayo’s aircraft reported being stuck in heavy clouds and expressed confusion regarding their destination shortly before radio contact was lost. Preliminary investigations by the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe suggest the aircraft struck the ground, causing a fuel spill and subsequent fire.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa visited the Chivayo family home to offer condolences and conferred Provincial Hero Status upon the businessman. Burial arrangements for the couple are set for October 8 at Glen Forest Cemetery in Harare. Due to the condition of the remains following the crash and fire, the family has stated there will be no public viewing of the bodies.
