Widow of Brazilian police officer faces near‑million‑real gambling debt

Raquel Maria de Oliveira Negrão, a nurse from Goiânia, discovered a debt of almost R$ 1 million left by her deceased husband, police officer Danilo Lopes Negrão. The debt resulted from Danilo’s gambling addiction to sports bets, which began during the 2022 World Cup, leading him to take loans from banks, friends and loan‑sharks. After his death in September 2023, Raquel found a detailed spreadsheet of creditors on his computer.

The debt triggered creditor threats, legal actions that blocked the family’s house from being sold, and ongoing emotional and financial strain for the widow.
