Widow Warns Brazil After Police Officer Danilo Negrão's Near‑Million‑Real Betting Debt

Raquel Maria de Oliveira Negrão, a nurse from Goiânia, has publicly warned about the dangers of sports betting after the death of her husband, Lieutenant Danilo Lopes Negrão of the Military Police. Danilo began gambling during the 2022 World Cup and over roughly ten months accumulated almost R$ 1 million in debt, borrowing from friends, agiots and a bank. Despite occasional early wins, he fell into a cycle of increasing bets, ultimately losing a final R$ 140 000 wager that contributed to his suicide in September 2023.

Raquel says the debt collapsed the family’s finances, forced her to support the household alone, and caused severe emotional distress. She noted that Danilo never received a formal diagnosis of ludopathy, though he showed signs of anxiety and depression. In her video posted in June 2026, she urges others to avoid betting and to seek help. She also referenced Brazil’s 2023 betting‑regulation law (Law 14.790) and the 2025 Centralised Auto‑Exclusion Platform that can block a CPF across all licensed betting sites, highlighting preventative tools that were unavailable when her husband became addicted.
