Wierzbica municipality straw fire causes 250,000 PLN in losses

A major fire in Zalesice, within the Wierzbica municipality, destroyed approximately 1,200 bales of straw, causing estimated losses of 250,000 PLN. The incident occurred during the night of September 19–20. The affected farm is one of the largest family-run agricultural operations in the Radom district, managing approximately 400 head of cattle.

The farmer, Piotr Wątły, suspects arson, noting that the fire appeared simultaneously in two different locations on opposite sides of the straw stacks. Surveillance footage reportedly showed a vehicle approaching the area shortly before flames were detected. This event marks the fourth straw fire in the Wierzbica municipality since the beginning of 2026.

The loss is significant for the farm's operations, as the destroyed straw represented about half of their annual requirement. Replacing the stock is expected to be difficult due to low straw yields this season and limited market availability. Firefighting efforts involving multiple units from the Volunteer Fire Department and the State Fire Service lasted until the following afternoon. Local police are investigating the cause.
