Wikimedia Foundation employees vote to unionize

Employees of the Wikimedia Foundation, the organization that manages Wikipedia, have voted overwhelmingly to unionize. Supervised by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), the vote saw 158 employees in favor of unionization compared to only 14 against. The emerging union, known as Wiki Workers United (WWU), seeks affiliation with the Communication Workers of America.

The labor dispute was triggered by the May 2026 dissolution of the Community Tech team, which consisted of five engineers and one manager. This team was responsible for developing essential tools for Wikipedia’s volunteer contributors. The decision to disband the team and redistribute its duties has caused significant friction between the foundation's management and its volunteer community.

In response to the restructuring, approximately 1,500 volunteer contributors have signed a petition supporting the employees. These volunteers have expressed a willingness to engage in collective action, including a potential “editorial strike,” which could threaten the operational stability and economic balance of the online encyclopedia.
