Wikimedia Foundation staff unionization

Staff at the Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit organization that operates Wikipedia, have voted to unionize for the first time. In an election overseen by the National Labor Relations Board, 158 employees voted in favor of joining the Communication Workers of America, while 14 voted against.

The unionizing group, identified as Wiki Workers United (WWU), includes staff from departments such as software engineering, finance, and communications. While initial reports suggested motivations included frustrations with management decisions regarding hiring, firing, and the disbanding of a team responsible for volunteer editor tools, further details indicate the labor dispute was specifically triggered by the May 2026 dissolution of the Community Tech team.

The decision to disband that team has caused friction not only within the foundation but also with the volunteer community. Approximately 1,500 volunteer contributors have signed a petition supporting the employees and have expressed a willingness to engage in collective action, including a potential “editorial strike.” The Wikimedia Foundation has stated it respects the election outcome and intends to proceed with “good-faith collective bargaining.”
