Wikimedia Foundation staff vote to unionize
Eligible staff at the Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit organization that operates Wikipedia, have voted to unionize for the first time. In an election conducted by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), more than 200 staffers participated, with the vote resulting in 158 in favor and 14 against joining the Communication Workers of America.
The unionized group includes employees across various departments, such as software engineering, finance, and communications. According to staff members, the drive was motivated less by pay and benefits and more by frustrations regarding management decisions, including how hiring and firing processes were communicated and the disbanding of a team responsible for volunteer editor tools.
The Wikimedia Foundation stated it respects the outcome and intends to move forward with good-faith collective bargaining. The organization expressed a commitment to approaching this next phase constructively and lawfully.
