Wild elephant Sulong Chalil relocated to Terengganu habitat

A male wild elephant known as ‘Sulong Chalil’ has been successfully relocated to a natural forest habitat in Terengganu. The relocation, managed by the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (PERHILITAN), was conducted via the Tasik Kenyir entrance to provide a safer environment and reduce human-wildlife conflict and road accident risks.

Sulong had been spotted near the East-West Highway (JRTB) in Gerik since August 17, drawing public attention after being recorded traveling alone from Gerik toward Gua Musang. During the monitoring period, the elephant was treated for a right leg injury, which is reportedly showing positive progress.

The capture operation was completed on August 30, followed by the transfer on September 1. The process was supported by the Royal Malaysia Police and utilized two trained elephants, Rambai and Cheri (also referred to as Indah and Suria), to help calm Sulong during the move. The elephant will continue to receive veterinary monitoring and treatment to ensure physical stability and successful adaptation to the new habitat.
