Relocation of Sulong the elephant to Terengganu
Overview
An adult male elephant named Sulong has been successfully relocated to a natural forest habitat in Terengganu. This follows a period of movement through the Titiwangsa Range and the Gerik-Jeli East-West Highway after his initial translocation from Chalil to the Gerik area in Perak.
During his time in the Gerik area, Sulong was monitored by the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (PERHILITAN) via drones and ground patrols. While he sustained a visible injury to his front right leg, officials reported that the wound showed signs of healing.
A capture operation was completed on August 30, with the subsequent transfer occurring on September 1. The relocation was managed via the Tasik Kenyir entrance to provide a safer environment and mitigate risks of road accidents and human-wildlife conflict. The operation was supported by the Royal Malaysia Police and utilized two trained elephants, Rambai and Cheri, to help calm Sulong during the process.
Sulong will continue to receive veterinary monitoring and treatment to ensure his physical stability and successful adaptation to the new habitat in Terengganu.
