Wildfire near Oriaokastro, Greece forces evacuation of chronic‑care centre

A forest fire broke out east of Oriaokastro in Greece, advancing to within about one kilometre of the town. Mayor Pantelis Tsakiris told ERT that the blaze has at least six active fronts, is being driven by wind, and is moving south toward the settlement of Evkarpia.

Authorities have activated the evacuation plan for the Institute of Chronic Care “St Panteleimon”, which houses 157 patients. Patients were transferred to a nearby facility in Kontaxopoulei and, where necessary, to a psychiatric hospital. An emergency order (112) was also issued for the Anthoupoli area. While the mayor said no houses have been confirmed destroyed, the fire has resulted in casualties, including a 12‑year‑old child.
