Wildfire smoke linked to long-term respiratory and inflammatory health issues
Research indicates that the health consequences of wildfire smoke extend far beyond immediate respiratory irritation, potentially causing long-term damage to lung function and increasing allergic sensitivity.
An observational study involving patients in North Carolina found that individuals with allergic rhinitis or asthma experienced measurable declines in lung function up to a year after exposure to peat bog fires. The study noted that for every 1 percent increase in time wind blew from the fire toward a community, peak flow dropped significantly, with the most pronounced declines observed in women and Black patients.
In Canada, researchers at Ontario Tech University are investigating how fine particulate matter (PM2.5) can enter the bloodstream and cause systemic inflammation. Experts suggest that repeated exposure may be linked to heart disease, stroke, cognitive decline, and psychological distress. Furthermore, early-life exposure to high levels of fine-particulate air pollution has been associated with the development of chronic inflammatory conditions, such as hypertension and arthritis, later in adulthood.
