Health impacts and global trends of wildfire smoke

Overview

Wildfire smoke presents diverse health challenges, ranging from general respiratory and systemic risks to specific occupational hazards. Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) can penetrate deep into the lungs and enter systemic circulation, causing symptoms such as headaches, coughing, asthma attacks, and heart palpitations. Research from the University of Manchester’s Cystic Fibrosis Hub Air Quality Research team indicates that managing indoor air quality is difficult, as indoor PM2.5 levels can remain two to four times higher than normal even when windows are closed.

Beyond general public health, smoke exposure poses severe risks to outdoor workers, including those in agricultural, construction, and delivery sectors. Wildland firefighters face increased mortality risks, including a 58% higher risk of dying from skin cancer and a 40% higher risk of dying from kidney cancer compared to non-firefighters. To address these hazards, researchers at Oklahoma State University’s Textile and Apparel Science Laboratory are developing advanced protective clothing designed to prevent chemical absorption while maintaining breathability.

Recent research highlights that the consequences of smoke extend far beyond immediate irritation. An observational study in North Carolina found that individuals with allergic rhinitis or asthma experienced measurable declines in lung function up to a year after exposure to peat bog fires. These declines were most pronounced in women and Black patients. Additionally, researchers at Ontario Tech University are investigating how PM2.5 enters the bloodstream to cause systemic inflammation, which may be linked to heart disease, stroke, cognitive decline, and psychological distress. Early-life exposure has also been associated with chronic conditions like hypertension and arthritis in adulthood.

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has warned that intensifying wildfires and heatwaves driven by climate change threaten to undermine global air quality efforts.

Wildfire smoke and occupational health risks for workers

Wildfire smoke poses unequal health risks to outdoor workers, while firefighters face significantly higher risks of skin and kidney cancer due to chemical absorption through protective gear.

Wildfire smoke poses severe respiratory and systemic health risks

Wildfire smoke containing PM2.5 poses severe respiratory and systemic health risks. Research shows that while closing windows helps, indoor air pollution remains significantly elevated during smoke events.
