Wildfire smoke poses escalating health risks across North America

Recent scientific research indicates that wildfire smoke poses significant health risks beyond respiratory issues, potentially affecting the heart, brain, and other organs. While air quality is often measured by PM2.5 concentrations, experts note this metric may understate the danger because it does not account for toxins such as lead, mercury, and formaldehyde. Fires in populated areas may be particularly hazardous as they consume buildings, vehicles, and electronics, releasing additional pollutants.

One study estimated that wildfire smoke could lead to as many as 1.9 million deaths in the United States over the next three decades. The impact is being felt across North America, with smoke from Canadian forests affecting various regions of the United States.

In Canada, residents in British Columbia have reported severe conditions where smoke is dense enough to leave ash on outdoor furniture and make breathing difficult. Such conditions disrupt daily routines, limit outdoor activities, and pose heightened risks to vulnerable populations, including children, older adults, and those with existing health conditions.
