Wildfire smoke poses severe respiratory and systemic health risks

Wildfire smoke poses significant health risks due to fine particulate matter (PM2.5), which can penetrate deep into the lungs and enter the systemic circulation. Exposure can cause symptoms ranging from headaches, coughing, and eye irritation to severe issues such as asthma attacks, chest pain, heart palpitations, and impaired cognition. Long-term or severe exposure may also impact reproductive health and fetal development.

Research from the University of Manchester’s Cystic Fibrosis Hub Air Quality Research team highlights the difficulty of managing indoor air quality during wildfire events. A study of homes in Greater Manchester found that while closing windows reduces PM2.5 exposure, indoor levels can still remain two to four times higher than normal. Opening windows to combat high temperatures can inadvertently increase indoor pollution levels, even if it helps reduce volatile organic compounds and carbon dioxide.

High-risk groups include children, older adults, and individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions like asthma, COPD, or cystic fibrosis. During peak smoke events, indoor air quality can breach World Health Organization guidelines, with some households recording concentrations several times higher than their typical baseline.
