Wildfire Threatens Homes and Saint Polycarp Church in Nafpaktia, Greece

On June 27, 2026 a wildfire erupted in the Lower Mamoulada area of the Nafpaktia municipality in Aetolia‑Acarnania, Greece. Strong winds quickly spread the flames across dry vegetation and forest, threatening residential houses, farm buildings and the historic Saint Polycarp church located nearby.

Firefighters from the local brigade, reinforced by units from EMAC Patras and volunteer rescue teams, deployed ground crews and aerial assets. Two fixed‑wing aircraft and a helicopter dropped fire‑retardant while crews worked to protect structures and prevent the fire from reaching high‑voltage power lines. The mayor of Nafpaktia, Vasilis Gkizas, and the archdiocesan priest P. Thomas Vamvines inspected the site and thanked the responders. By the evening of June 28 the blaze was reported to be partially under control, with no confirmed damage to homes.
