Europe faces massive economic losses and wildfires from 2026 heatwaves
Europe is facing severe consequences from the 2026 extreme weather season, characterized by intense heatwaves and devastating wildfires. Allianz Trade reports that these heatwaves have caused an estimated 113 billion euros in economic losses across 30 European countries, representing approximately 0.46% of their combined GDP. Italy, Germany, and France are the most heavily impacted, accounting for nearly two-thirds of the total losses.
In terms of mortality, EuroMOMO data indicates that over 35,000 deaths in Europe were linked to the heat. Wildfire activity has also been extreme; in Spain, approximately 299,501 hectares burned as of late September, a figure triple the historical average. In France, the Saumos megafire in the Gironde region, which burned 42,000 hectares, has been officially declared extinguished after causing the evacuation of over 224,000 people. Despite the scale of the destruction, no human casualties were reported from the Saumos fire.
Ongoing challenges include continued forest fire risks in France, with 1,800 hectares destroyed since the start of September, and the long-term degradation of soil health following major burns.
