Wildfires devastate regions in Calabria, Italy

Multiple wildfires have caused significant environmental damage and community distress in the Calabria region of Italy. In Scala Coeli, specifically the Palazzina/Montagna area, a new fire broke out just eleven days after a previous blaze devastated the Mediterranean scrub and forest lands. Local environmental group Legambiente Nicà reported extensive destruction of various plant species, including pines, oaks, and rosemary, describing the scene as a profound environmental disaster.

In the town of Stilo, a fire ignited at multiple points simultaneously, creating a fire front several hundred meters wide that approached residential areas. Local administration officials have condemned the event, suggesting the simultaneous ignition of multiple hotspots may indicate a criminal act intended to overwhelm emergency responders. The fire in Stilo also damaged natural heritage, destroyed land, and impacted the local water network. Similar incidents have recently been reported in the nearby areas of Pazzano and Bivongi.
