Wildfires ignited by lightning reported in British Columbia

Multiple wildfires have been reported across British Columbia following lightning storms.

In the Cherryville area, the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) identified three new fires on Wednesday, August 26. Fire K42011, located south of Highway 6 and approximately 8 km southwest of Cherryville, is currently 0.4 hectares and out of control. Fire K42001, situated north of Highway 6 and the Shuswap River, is being held at 0.009 hectares. A third fire, K42023, is reported as out of control at 0.009 hectares near Woodward Creek. All three Cherryville-area fires are suspected to have been caused by lightning.

Separately, a trio of wildfires known as the Hooker Creek cluster has emerged on the East Shore near Crawford Bay, Kootenay Bay, and Gray Creek. The cluster includes Hooker Creek 3 (20 hectares), Hooker Creek 2 (15 hectares), and Hooker Creek 1 (0.009 hectares), all of which are classified as out of control.

The BCWS stated these fires are burning in steep, unsafe terrain and do not currently pose a risk to structures or infrastructure. A modified response strategy is in place, involving monitoring and regular assessments. Nearby communities should expect visible smoke and fire activity in the coming days.
