Wildfires in British Columbia

Overview

Wildfires have impacted various regions across British Columbia. In mid-August, lightning-sparked blazes caused significant concern near Golden and Revelstoke. The Sea Lion Mountain fire scorched approximately 1,144 hectares in steep terrain near Yoho and Banff national parks, while other fires in the northern Selkirk Mountains, such as the Nightmare FSR and Gannet Creek fires, remained out of control.

By late August, emergency response efforts expanded to include both wildfires and structure fires. In Salmon Arm, the fire department contained a structure fire at the Birch Lanes manufactured home park on 20th Avenue NE. The blaze occurred in an unoccupied residence and was difficult to extinguish because a secondary roof “trapped heat between layers.” In the Burns Lake area, lightning strikes triggered several wildfires; while one small fire near 7 Mile Forest Service Road was extinguished, a 110-hectare blaze near Endako remains out of control, requiring helicopters and air tankers.

On August 26, the BC Wildfire Service identified three new lightning-suspected fires in the Cherryville area. Fire K42011 and fire K42023 near Woodward Creek are currently out of control, while fire K42001 is being held. Additionally, the “Hooker Creek cluster” has emerged on the East Shore near Crawford Bay, Kootenay Bay, and Gray Creek. This cluster includes three fires—Hooker Creek 1, 2, and 3—all classified as out of control. These fires are burning in steep, unsafe terrain and do not currently pose a risk to structures or infrastructure, though local communities should expect visible smoke.
