Wildfires fueled by a severe heatwave have killed at least 12 people across northeastern Algeria, according to Interior Minister Said Sayoud. The fatalities were recorded in the provinces of Jijel (5), Bejaia (4), and Tizi Ouzou (3).

In Bejaia, 54 people suffered burn injuries, with six reported in critical condition. Specific casualties in Bejaia included an 8-year-old boy and a 22-year-old woman. In Tizi Ouzou, three women from the same family reportedly died of smoke inhalation in the village of Ath Ali.

Algeria's civil protection services recorded 154 wildfires across the country on Wednesday. Authorities have mobilized significant forces to combat multiple active fronts, which are being exacerbated by strong winds and drought conditions. The fires have forced numerous families to evacuate their homes and have led to the closure of at least three national roads in the eastern part of the country.

Interior Minister Said Sayoud and Health Minister Mohamed Seddik Ait Messaoudene visited Bejaia to assess firefighting operations and the medical status of the injured.
