Tuzla Canton considers helicopter purchase after 395 wildfires

The Tuzla Canton Government in Bosnia and Herzegovina is considering the purchase of a multi-purpose helicopter following a surge in wildfires. Between August and mid-September 2026, the region recorded 395 fires. Emergency interventions were severely hampered by prolonged drought, high winds, difficult terrain, and the presence of minefields. To combat these fires, authorities had to rely on aerial support from the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina, helicopters from Zenica-Doboj Canton, and air tractors from Mostar.

Simultaneously, firefighting efforts continue on the Čvrsnica mountain. The fire remains active on extremely difficult terrain, prompting the deployment of 2,000 meters of high-pressure piping to transport water to high altitudes. Croatian Canadair aircraft have been assisting with water drops to help contain the spread. Authorities emphasize the need for long-term strategic improvements to the rescue system, including better equipment, training, and coordination to handle large-scale incidents in inaccessible areas.
