Overview

Wildfires continue to impact regions in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, and the Balkans. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, large-scale fires have heavily impacted the Blidinje Nature Park and Čvrsnica mountain areas. While a major fire on Blidinje was largely contained, the situation on Mount Čvrsnica remains critical.

As of late September 2026, the fire on Mount Čvrsnica has remained active for 11 days. Due to the intensity of the blaze and extremely difficult terrain, the Civil Protection and Firefighting Directorate of the West Herzegovina Canton requested additional assistance from Croatia. In response, Croatian Canadair aircraft have been deployed to assist with water drops. To combat the fire, authorities have deployed approximately 2,000 meters of high-pressure hydraulic piping to transport water to high altitudes. Helicopters from the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina are also participating, dropping water at altitudes of 1,800 meters to create a protective belt between Mandina Plane and Orlovaca, aiming to prevent the fire from spreading toward Masna Luka and the southwestern slopes of the Čvrsnica massif.

In the Tuzla Canton, the government is considering the purchase of a multi-purpose helicopter following a surge in wildfires; between August and mid-September 2026, the region recorded 395 fires. Emergency interventions in Tuzla were hampered by drought, high winds, difficult terrain, and the presence of minefields, forcing reliance on the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Zenica-Doboj Canton helicopters, and air tractors from Mostar.

Additional fire activity has been reported in the West Herzegovina and Herzegovina-Neretva Cantons, including Grude, Mostar, Čapljina, and Čitluk. In Croatia, firefighting operations remain intensive, particularly on the island of Brač. In Montenegro, firefighters in Nikšić have been working for months to combat fires in Lukavica and Praga with military assistance.
