France wildfires devastate Gironde and Tarn regions

Massive wildfires are ravaging parts of France, with the Gironde region facing historic destruction. In Gironde, approximately 42,000 hectares have burned, making it one of the largest fires in France since World War II. The blaze has forced the evacuation of roughly 220,000 people, with 55,000 new evacuations ordered recently near the Arcachon Basin and the Bordeaux metropolitan area. While the city of Bordeaux itself is not currently under evacuation orders, the fire has reached the outskirts of the agglomeration.

In the Tarn department, a significant forest fire between Sauveterre and Lacabarède has mobilized 170 firefighters. The fire has consumed between 10 and 20 hectares and remains uncontained, though emergency services have successfully protected several homes.

Volunteer firefighters from across the country, including regions such as Morbihan and Eure, have been deployed to assist in the South-West. These responders have reported extreme conditions, including rapid fire progression and heavy smoke during operations in areas like Biscarrosse and Lège-Cap-Ferret.
