Gironde Wildfire Forces Over 220,000 Evacuations in France, Spills Into Spain FAST-MOVING
A massive wildfire ravaging France’s Gironde department has burned roughly 42,000 hectares, creating a self‑feeding firestorm and generating its own winds. The blaze, described by French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez as “extremely virulent and unpredictable,” is now only about 15 km from the city of Bordeaux.
French authorities have mobilised 2,500 firefighters, 1,500 soldiers, 1,200 police officers and 18 aerial aircraft, while 75 firefighters have been injured, ten of whom were evacuated. Around 220,000 residents have been forced to leave their homes in Gironde, the largest evacuation in France since World War II.
In neighbouring Spain, the fire fronts in the Madrid‑Ávila region and a new front near Valencia have prompted evacuations of more than 100,000 people, bringing the combined total for France and Spain to over 330,000. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has visited the affected zones and declared the areas severely impacted, while the European Union has supplied additional aircraft and ground crews.
