Wildfires in the Amazon threaten communities and air quality in Brazil

Wildfires are causing significant environmental and social distress across the Amazon region in Brazil. In Santarém, Pará, advancing flames are threatening homes, crops, and traditional territories, particularly along the PA-370 highway. Local residents are mobilizing to protect their livelihoods and food security as the fires jeopardize the means of subsistence for families dependent on the land.

In the state of Amazonas, air quality has reached alarming levels due to thousands of fire outbreaks. Data from the Electronic Environmental Surveillance System (Selva) indicates that while Manaus has experienced moderate air quality, cities such as Itacoatiara, Itapiranga, Nhamundá, and Urucurituba have recorded very poor or unsatisfactory pollutant levels.

The crisis is exacerbated by prolonged drought and high temperatures. The resulting smoke poses serious health risks to vulnerable populations, including children and the elderly. Firefighters are actively working to combat the blazes, particularly in rural areas where the fires threaten both human settlements and local fauna.
