Wildfires in Washington State burn over 800,000 acres

Wildfires in Washington State have reached significant levels, with the Washington State Department of Natural Resources reporting that over 800,000 acres have burned this year, marking the third-highest total since 2015. While evacuation orders for the Spokane area have been lifted following the destruction of hundreds of buildings, 15 large fires in the state remain uncontrolled.

Federal data indicates that more than three-quarters of wildfires in the United States are human-caused, stemming from negligence, downed power lines, or arson. In Spokane, 37-year-old Aaron Farinacci was arrested for allegedly starting the Old Trails Fire, which contributed to the destructive Spokane Complex Fires. Authorities stated Farinacci admitted to starting more than two dozen wildfires.

Despite cooling temperatures, fire risks remain high due to dry ground fuels and expected wind and low humidity in eastern Washington. State officials warn that some fires may persist into October or until snowfall occurs, and outdoor burning bans remain in effect through September 30.
