Wildfires Ravage Argeș County, Romania, Threatening Homes and Crops

In late July, fire crews in Argeș County responded to eight vegetation and waste fires across towns including Pitești, Mioveni, Mălureni, Bârla, Ungheni, Aninoasa, Leordeni and Bradu. The Inspectorate for Emergency Situations recorded 177 emergency incidents between 24 and 27 July, with the fires endangering residential buildings and agricultural fields; one blaze in Leordeni consumed about 5,000 m² of wheat stubble.

Authorities warn that most vegetation fires are caused by human activity and are illegal. Penalties range from 7,500 to 15,000 lei for individuals and 50,000 to 100,000 lei for legal entities. Residents are urged not to burn dry vegetation, discard cigarettes, or ignite waste, and to call 112 immediately if a fire starts.
