Spain's record wildfire near Madrid forces 79,000 evacuations
A massive wildfire near Madrid has become Spain's largest on record, scorching about 193 square miles (500 km²) of forest. The blaze, driven by extreme heat and wind gusts up to 30 km/h, has forced the evacuation of roughly 79,000 people from the Ávila fire zone, nearby areas of Madrid and a fire in Castellón. No deaths have been reported.
A 40‑member firefighting brigade led by veteran firefighter Javier García has been battling the fire for three days on 12‑hour shifts. About 25,000 residents fled villages in the Ávila region alone. The Interior Minister Fernando Grande‑Marlaska said the situation is evolving slowly but positively, while the Ecology Minister Sara Aagesen reported that 590 square miles have burned nationwide this year—six times the amount burned in the first half of the previous year. Climate change has lengthened Spain’s extreme fire‑risk period from roughly 15 days to 30‑40 days per year.
The Catholic Church has also responded, with Auxiliary Bishop José María Avendaño and Father Álvaro Piñero coordinating shelter, aid and sacraments for displaced residents at the Villaviciosa de Odón sports centre, assisting more than 300 evacuees.
