Pyrenees forest fires scorch 1,500 ha in France and over 2,200 ha in Spain

A major wildfire in the Eastern Pyrenees near Trevillach has reignited, burning roughly 1,500 hectares of vegetation. The prefect of the Eastern Pyrenees, Pierre Regnault de la Mothe, described the blaze as a “front of fire of about 18 kilometres” and noted that around 700 firefighters, supported by 200 vehicles and nine aircraft, are engaged in the fight. Approximately 80 residents have been ordered to evacuate or self‑isolate as winds and high temperatures intensify the fire.

At the same time, a separate blaze on Spain’s Costa Brava in Catalonia has consumed more than 2,200 hectares, most of it within the protected Gavarres area. Authorities have evacuated dozens of people and warned that the risk remains high due to a new heat wave. Firefighters attribute the ignition to probable negligence involving a construction worker’s grinding tool. Both incidents involve extensive aerial water‑bombing and are expected to face a “complicated day” because of continuing heat and wind, according to senior officers such as Colonel Stéphane Clerc.

The twin fires underline the strain on firefighting resources across the region, with coordinated ground and air operations aimed at containing the flames and protecting nearby communities.
