Southeast Europe battles widespread wildfires across multiple borders
Multiple countries across Southeast Europe and Hungary are battling widespread wildfires driven by high temperatures and drought.
In Montenegro, a significant fire near Žager in Herceg Novi led to the preventive evacuation of approximately 30 residents. While the situation is improving and homes have been defended, strong winds continue to challenge firefighting efforts.
Bosnia and Herzegovina is facing an alarming situation, with the city of Konjic declaring a state of natural disaster. Fires in the Konjic area, including Kanjina and Živašnica, are spreading toward Džepska mountain, and international aerial assistance has been requested.
In Serbia, approximately 40 active fires are being fought, with the most critical areas being Deliblatska Peščara, where a blaze has covered roughly 2,000 hectares, and Stolovi near Kraljevo.
Croatia is experiencing a surge in fire incidents, with over 8,800 recorded so far this year. Major operations are underway on the island of Brač, where firefighters are using Canadair aircraft to combat forest fires, and in Mašićka Šagovina, where an open flame caused significant material damage.
In North Macedonia, 40 open-space fires were recorded by early morning, with several remaining active in various municipalities. Meanwhile, in Hungary, drought-induced fires are affecting several counties, including Pest and Veszprém.
