Balkan wildfires cause fatalities and mass evacuations
Multiple regions across the Balkans are battling widespread wildfires. In Croatia, a devastating fire near Omiš has resulted in one fatality and approximately 43 injuries, with many victims requiring intensive care in Zagreb. The blaze has affected roughly 1,000 hectares of land and forced the evacuation of approximately 2,500 people. In the Dinara mountain region, fires have crossed the border from Bosnia and Herzegovina into Croatia, prompting the deployment of 26 Croatian Army soldiers and aerial support from Canadair aircraft.
On Dugi Otok, firefighters successfully localized a large fire near Savar and Brbinj, protecting residential areas despite difficult terrain and strong winds. Meanwhile, in Bosnia and Herzegovina, significant firefighting efforts are underway in the Herceg Novi region, including the use of Montenegrin military helicopters to combat fires in Baošićima and Bijela. In Serbia, over 25 active fires are being managed, with the largest affecting more than 2,500 hectares in the Deliblatska Peščara region.
Authorities in several areas, including Tuzla, have issued warnings regarding high fire risks due to prolonged drought and high temperatures, with some regions implementing strict penalties for illegal burning.
