Wildfires strain emergency services in Croatia and Serbia

Wildfires are causing significant disruption and personal hardship across Croatia and Serbia. In Croatia, SDSS Vice President Anja Šimpraga has called for the urgent establishment of a national firefighting network. While noting record investments in equipment and vehicles, she emphasized that the 2020 Firefighting Act requires a formalized network to ensure rapid and equitable assistance, particularly in rural and hard-to-reach areas like Omiš, Pelješac, Zadar, and Dinara.

In Serbia, the personal toll on emergency responders is becoming evident. Firefighter Marko Topličanin, while battling fires on the cliffs of Stolovi, learned that his own home in Kraljevo was being consumed by flames due to electrical issues. His colleagues and neighbors assisted in clearing the debris from his property, highlighting the communal solidarity present during the ongoing fire crisis.
