Wildfires strain resources and budgets in Idaho and Montana

Wildfires are causing significant economic and environmental strain across the Pacific Northwest. In Idaho, nearly 700,000 acres have burned so far this year, with officials predicting high fire risks will persist through September. The Idaho Department of Lands has spent approximately $31 million on fire suppression, though it expects to be reimbursed for roughly $10.9 million. State officials are preparing budget requests to increase dedicated firefighting funds to manage the growing costs and drying conditions.

In Montana, Governor Greg Gianforte announced that the state has secured a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Fire Management Assistance Grant to combat the Sand Creek Fire. The blaze, located in Beaverhead County, has exceeded 30,000 acres and remains only 1% contained. The fire has impacted the Maverick Mountain Ski Area and prompted evacuation orders for communities near Elkhorn Hot Springs. The federal grant is expected to cover up to 75% of eligible firefighting costs, including equipment, supplies, and mobilization.
