Italy fights widespread wildfires in Rome, Gargano and Basilicata

A large fire erupted in Monterotondo, a town near Rome, prompting the closure of via Nilde Iotti and via di Vallagati and the deployment of an aerial firefighting helicopter. Mayor Riccardo Varone urged residents to avoid the area.

In the Gargano peninsula of Apulia, multiple blazes burned across Vieste, Cagnano Varano, Peschici and San Marco in Lamis. About twenty people were evacuated from an agriturismo in San Marco in Lamis, and a nearby LPG tank was threatened. Canadair aircraft and ground crews from the Vigili del Fuoco were dispatched.

Basilicata’s Vulture‑Melfese area also saw several fires, with the most critical front near San Fele where flames approached inhabited zones. Helicopters and Canadair water‑bombers were used to contain the spread.

In Rome’s Prati district, a wildfire on Monte Ciocci ignited near via Pietro De Cristofaro and via Cipro, generating a high smoke column visible for kilometres. Three fire squads, the regional fire‑direction centre (DOS), the Protezione Civile and a helicopter were mobilised, and local roads were closed.

Across all regions, high temperatures, strong winds and dry vegetation have intensified the fire season, prompting extensive emergency responses and public safety warnings.
