Wildfires sweep across Italy, destroying thousands of hectares in July 2026
A series of wildfires erupted across Italy in late July 2026, affecting regions from Basilicata’s Vulture‑Melfese area to Lazio, Puglia, Sardinia and the Gargano peninsula. High temperatures, strong winds and dry vegetation intensified the fire season, leading to the burning of thousands of hectares of forest, scrub, pasture and agricultural land. Notable incidents include a 40‑hectare blaze near Guidonia and Tivoli, a fire that threatened an agriturismo in San Marco in Lamis with about twenty occupants, a blaze that destroyed vegetation and farmland around Alghero and forced the temporary closure of a stretch of the Strada dei Due Mari, and a large fire in Monterotondo that closed Via Nilde Iotti and Via di Vallagati. Authorities deployed ground crews, helicopters, Canadair aircraft and volunteer volunteers; evacuations were ordered for an agriturismo, beaches at Castel Gandolfo and nearby residences. Local mayors, including Riccardo Varone of Monterotondo and Giuseppe Nobiletti of Vieste, issued warnings to avoid the affected zones. Political parties responded, with Fratelli d’Italia proposing extra premium points for farms in the Agrigento area hit by the fires. In Puglia, nearly 5,000 hectares were destroyed in the first two months of summer, making the province of Bari the hardest hit.
