Crete wildfires kill three firefighters, force 8,000 evacuations FAST-MOVING
Three Greek firefighters died while battling wildfires on July 29 2026 – two near Krya Vrysi in the Rethymno region of Crete and one near Gytheio on the Peloponnese. Strong winds of up to 125 km/h (Beaufort 11) hampered aerial water drops, limiting aircraft operations.
Around 8,000 residents were evacuated from villages on Crete, including the coastal town of Agia Galini, as flames spread across the island and to nearby Aegean islands such as Paros, Lesbos, Andros and Kalymnos. A State of Emergency was declared for the municipality of Agios Vasileios, and a Very High Fire Risk (Category 4) warning covered large parts of Greece through July 30‑31.
More than 200 firefighters, supported by 46 fire engines, 10 helicopters and 13 firefighting aircraft, continued to fight the blazes. Similar severe fire conditions persisted in Turkey’s Antalya region, while the situation eased in France and Spain, where most evacuees have returned home.
