Madrid forest fire worsens as strong winds hinder firefighting efforts
Strong winds of up to 30 km/h are forecast to affect the ongoing forest fire in the Sierra Oeste of Madrid, complicating the work of firefighters, the Emergency Unit of the Military, Guardia Civil and other emergency services. The most vulnerable zones are the Cofio River area, the El Encinar del Alberche urbanisation in Villa del Prado, and the settlements south of the San Juan reservoir in San Martín de Valdeiglesias. Authorities aim to strengthen the fire perimeter, cool hot spots and prevent re‑ignitions, but the weather remains a major obstacle.
Spain is also experiencing a third heat wave of the summer, with temperatures exceeding 42 °C in parts of the country and more than 60 active forest fires across regions such as Madrid, Ávila, Guadalajara and Teruel. The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) notes that 81 heat waves have been recorded since 1975, most of them after 2001. Google Maps now offers a fire‑alert layer that marks active fires in red and zones of possible activity in yellow, using data from official sources, though users are advised to follow authorities' instructions.
Interior Minister Fernando Grande‑Marlaska said the evolution of the Madrid fires is positive but slow, reflecting the gradual stabilisation of the blaze under challenging meteorological conditions.
