Wildfires Threaten Villages in Macedonia and Greece

Firefighters in Strumica, Macedonia, battled a forest fire that reached the villages of Baijkovo, Mokrjevo, Petralinci and Ednokukevo. They saved several houses and the St Peter and Paul church in Baijkovo and warned residents to avoid burning straw, debris or dry vegetation.

On the Greek island of Evia, a large blaze driven by strong winds spread toward populated areas. Authorities raised the emergency level, ordered evacuations toward the coastal town of Aliveria and deployed about 80 firefighters, 24 fire‑engine vehicles, six firefighting aircraft, three helicopters and drone surveillance to contain the fire.
