Wiliete SC eliminates Mamelodi Sundowns from CAF Champions League

Angolan club Wiliete SC has achieved a historic qualification for the CAF Champions League group stage after eliminating the defending champions, Mamelodi Sundowns. The tie was decided by the away-goals rule following a 1-1 aggregate score across two legs.

After a goalless draw in the first leg in Benguela, the second leg at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria saw Mamelodi Sundowns take an early lead in the 11th minute through Tashreeq Matthews. However, Wiliete SC equalized in the 49th minute via striker Mabululu. Despite late pressure from the South African side, the Angolan team held on to the draw.

This result marks the first time since 2015 that Mamelodi Sundowns has failed to reach the group stage of Africa’s premier club competition. For Wiliete SC, founded only in 2018, the achievement represents a major continental milestone.
