Wiliete SC eliminates Mamelodi Sundowns from CAF Champions

Overview

Wiliete SC has secured a historic spot in the CAF Champions League group stage after eliminating the defending champions, Mamelodi Sundowns. Following a 0-0 draw in the first leg in Benguela, Angola, the two teams played to a 1-1 draw at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria on October 23, 2026.

Tashreeq Matthews scored for Sundowns in the 11th minute, but Mabululu equalized for Wiliete in the 49th minute following a defensive error. The away goals rule ultimately decided the tie, resulting in Sundowns' exit from the competition. This marks the first time since 2015 that the South African club has failed to reach the group stages, ending a streak of 11 consecutive appearances. For Wiliete SC, founded only in 2018, the achievement represents a major continental milestone.

In related CAF continental action, Petro de Luanda advanced to the group stage after a 3-0 victory over Zimbabwe’s FC Scotland, overturning a 0-2 first-leg deficit. Orlando Pirates also secured their spot with a 5-0 aggregate win over Namibia’s African Stars, while MC Alger progressed. Conversely, Kaizer Chiefs were eliminated from the CAF Confederation Cup after losing a penalty shootout to Zambia’s Red Arrows.
