Wilker Leão arrested for vandalism at University of Brasília

Wilker Leão, a candidate for federal deputy representing the Novo party, was arrested in flagrante by the Federal Police on September 27 following an incident at the University of Brasília (UnB). Leão, a former student of the institution, was caught vandalizing the Institute of Arts (IdA) by painting over existing murals on the building's exterior walls without authorization.

Reports and video footage indicate that the situation escalated when Leão and his supporters were confronted by individuals questioning the legality of the painting. During the confrontation, Leão reportedly made threats, including a comment regarding LGBT symbols. Additionally, supporters of the candidate were accused of physically assaulting students on campus, with one student reporting being punched in the head.

The University of Brasília issued a formal statement condemning the acts of violence and destruction of public property, characterizing them as methods used by the far-right to avoid qualified debate. UnB has activated its security protocols and is pursuing administrative and legal measures to hold those responsible accountable.

Leão has a history of conflict with the university; he was expelled in 2025 following disciplinary proceedings related to recording professors and students without consent to ridicule them. Following his arrest, a federal judge granted Leão provisional liberty, noting that the crime involved low penalties and that there was no immediate risk of flight or interference with evidence.
