William Lawrence faces scrutiny over podcast remarks

William Lawrence, a Democratic candidate for a competitive House seat in Michigan, has faced scrutiny following remarks made during a January 2024 episode of the Hegomonicon podcast. During the discussion with Marxist activists, Lawrence stated, “I’m wondering how we can inspire a sense of abundance for people in the United States, while frankly, destroying the American way of life and the negative connotations and material realities that has come to mean.”

Lawrence, a co-founder of the environmental activist group Sunrise Movement and a former member of the Democratic Socialists of America, also discussed his support for the “keep it in the ground” movement. This movement advocates for the cessation of all oil and gas drilling to combat climate change. He noted that the Sunrise Movement previously made a “political choice” in 2019 to avoid discussing opposition to drilling to maintain support for the Green New Deal.
