Williams Lake incident investigation launched by IIO

The Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO) is investigating an incident in Williams Lake that resulted in serious, non-life-threatening injuries to a woman. The event occurred on May 8, 2026, in a municipal park following an interaction involving bylaw officers and city staff.

RCMP officers were called to the scene and advised the woman to leave the park. During a subsequent interaction with an RCMP officer, the woman sustained her injuries. The IIO was formally notified of the matter on July 3 by the Police Accountability Unit of the BC First Nations Justice Council, which is representing the woman.

Investigators are currently determining if the injuries meet the threshold of serious harm as defined by the Police Act and whether there is a connection between the harm and officer action or inaction. The IIO is seeking witnesses or video footage related to the incident.
