Williamtown RAAF base and Newcastle Airport hit by drone breaches

NSW Police have confirmed multiple incidents of illegal drone activity occurring throughout July and August at Newcastle Airport and the Williamtown RAAF base. Local officers initially responded to reports of unauthorised Uncrewed Aircraft System (UAS) activity before the investigation was expanded.

NSW Police are currently collaborating with the Australian Defence Force and other partner agencies to identify the drones and their pilots. As of August 20, no arrests or charges have been made in connection with these security breaches.

Flying a UAS in a manner that creates a hazard to aircraft operations or within restricted airspace is a criminal offence. The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) can issue infringement notices of up to $1,820 per offence, while more serious violations may result in court-imposed penalties of up to $18,200.
