Wilmer ‘Pipo’ Chavarría’s extradition to Ecuador delayed by legal appeal

The extradition of Wilmer Geovanny Chavarría Barré, known as ‘Pipo’, a suspected leader of the Los Lobos criminal group, has been delayed following a legal appeal in Spain. Although the Spanish National Court previously authorized his transfer to Ecuador, Chavarría’s defense has filed a ‘recurso de súplica’ (appeal for review) to challenge the decision.

Ecuadorian Interior Minister Jhon Reimberg stated that the judicial review process in Spain is expected to take place during September. Once the appeal is resolved, authorities will coordinate his transfer to Ecuador. Chavarría is sought by Ecuadorian authorities to serve a 16-year prison sentence for three homicides related to a 2010 bank robbery shooting.

While Spain previously rejected a direct extradition request from the United States, the Ecuadorian government indicated that Chavarría’s arrival in Ecuador could facilitate a subsequent extradition process to the U.S. American authorities have linked him to transnational drug trafficking involving cocaine shipments to California.
