Wind energy industry pursues recyclable blades and towerless technology

The wind energy industry is addressing environmental and waste management challenges through new technological and material innovations. One significant issue is the disposal of turbine blades, which are typically made of composite materials like fiberglass or carbon fiber that are difficult to recycle. It is estimated that by 2050, approximately 43 million tons of wind turbine waste could be generated globally.

In response, a consortium of companies including Germany's Voodin Blade Technology and Anker-Tec, alongside Lithuania's VMG Wood Invest and VMG Technics, has proposed the construction of a commercial plant in Navarra, Spain. The facility aims to manufacture recyclable wind turbine blades made from laminated wood. The project involves an estimated investment of 100 million euros, is expected to be operational by 2031, and could create approximately 450 jobs.

Other technological developments include a Chinese concept for a towerless wind energy system. This involves a 60-meter helium dirigible anchored by steel cables at an altitude of 2,000 meters, equipped with 12 wind turbines. This design aims to reduce land use, minimize noise and stroboscopic effects, and access more consistent wind flows. However, this method faces mechanical challenges regarding cable strength, the finite nature of helium, and airspace safety concerns.
