Wind energy waste management and recycling innovations

Overview

The wind energy industry is developing technological and material innovations to address the environmental challenges of turbine waste. A major concern is the disposal of composite turbine blades, which are difficult to recycle and could result in approximately 43 million tons of waste globally by 2050.

To mitigate this, a consortium including companies from Germany and Lithuania has proposed a 100 million euro project in Navarra, Spain, to manufacture recyclable blades made from laminated wood. Additionally, research is being conducted into towerless wind systems, such as helium-anchored dirigibles, to reduce land use and noise.

In Europe, the EU-funded REWIND project is working to ensure end-of-life blades are not landfilled or incinerated. This research includes efforts by the German Institutes of Textile and Fiber Research Denkendorf (DITF) to transform recycled glass and carbon fibers into yarns and fabrics. These recycled materials can be repurposed for wind turbine repair kits or high-value applications in the automotive and insulation industries. The consortium has validated a model that predicts the mechanical behavior of recovered materials with over 90% accuracy.
